Following the controversial execution of Troy Davis in Florida, death penalty opponents may be heartened by today’s decision by Republican Governor John Kasich of Ohio. Taking into account the defendant’s age at the time of the offense and his “brutal” upbringing, Gov. Kasich commuted Joseph Murphy’s sentence to life without parole. Politicians are constantly under pressure to be tough on crime. Gov. Kasich deserves credit for what certainly was a difficult political and moral decision for him.
